Read MoreWhat You Really Learn in an Interior Design Course (Beyond Color Theory)
In other words, the Interior design course syllabus is not so much “making things pretty.” Decorating is that. True interior design, as studied in professional school, is a combination of art, science, and reality-grounded negotiating (and sometimes, with difficult clients and tight budgets).
You’re just halfway there if you arrive at your first class expecting swatches and mood boards. That’s actually what occurs behind the scenes and why a good design course does so much more than instruct you on coordinating couches and drapes.
- Instead of decorating like a designer, you learn to think like one.
Style is only a part of interior design. Your program will teach you how to think about space in a different way, how to measure items like dimensions, flow, balance, and usage by people in a space. You’ll begin to ask, “How does this space need to work?” rather than, “What looks good here?”
A well-designed space is lovely, intuitive, and easy to use. Function is the basis of style. - Software Will Be Used More Than Sketchbooks.
Although you will initially be using freehand drawings, you will be using software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Revit more and more. You can take ideas and turn them into blueprints and 3D models with these packages, which become your new language.
The real lesson is that the quality of ideas is irrelevant if you cannot make them clear to contractors, builders, and customers. - You Learn Structures as an Architect
Codes, mechanicals, and structural components will all be covered. The words floor joists, HVAC systems, and ADA requirements may seem dull, but they are so vital to the safety and legality of a design.
A gorgeous design that neglects a light switch or violates the fire code won’t go away. - A Material Nerd Intervenes
The way you conceptualize a floor tile will be forever altered. From bamboo floors to reclaimed concrete panels, you will feel, test, and examine every material to understand how it wears out over time. You’re designing long-term wear-and-tear applications in real-world environments, not just aesthetics.
You Learn the Ability to Sell Your Ideas (With Dignity and tenacity)
Presentation design combines elements of a boardroom presentation and an art gallery. You’ll discover the way to sell your vision to clients who don’t yet “see” it and how to properly defend your decisions.
The greatest designers are not only imaginative; they are also tenacious, competent, and cool under pressure.- You’re a Project Manager too.
As astonishing as it seems, you’re not only designing, but also managing, too. Schedules, money, contractors, and the occasional round of last-minute panic (like the tile that came in the wrong color, again) will all need to be managed.
The real lesson is that great design is half logistics and half vision. Both are necessary for success.
