Day in the Life of an Interior Design Student: Tools, Projects & Deadlines

The life of an interior design student is not easy; though it is creative, it is also demanding, with a blend of theory and hands-on studio work, practical projects, etc.
Students learn and maintain to balance between multiple deadlines of research works, technical drawing, and model-making. It starts with the research work first, by seeking inspiration from different sources like magazines, social media sites like Pinterest, design blogs, and creative pages. Understanding the lectures on core topics that build the information from the creative foundation, which includes design brief, design history, elements of design, principle of design, color theory and psychology, material knowledge, and interior furnishings.
Studio design is an important, hands-on, and crucial project development. Students use theoretical knowledge to practical design by experimenting with different textures, to explain in front of experienced mentors.

Technical knowledge is also important to understand as interior design students to understand, as it helps students to get trained in software according to industry standards. There is some industry-based software like AutoCAD, SketchUp, Revit, 3dsMax, Vray, Photoshop, etc.

Interior Design Student Life

In the life of an interior design student, field trips and construction site visits, showroom and design exhibitions visits also include exploring the materials, construction techniques, and project management.
Submission, assignments, and portfolio work are also a part of an Interior Design Student’s Life.

Submission of assignments is also an important part, as students spend maximum evenings and nights to complete the given assignments and prepare the given presentations and projects.
Preparing a professional portfolio is also an ongoing task that involves showcasing the best work to grab future opportunities.
Working with Tools, there are some hardware and physical tools to help the students understand the interior design course better, including sketchbooks, pencils, and basic stationery, measuring tapes and tools, an architectural scale, and material samples.

  • Measuring tools help to measure the essential and material in larger spaces.
  • Architectural scale helps to do measurements in a smaller scale through a ruler.

Material samples help to create material boards by adding swatches of fabrics, tile, flooring, and wooden samples.
Students of interior design should know how to manage deadlines to complete tasks and submissions. Residential design, commercial design, mood boards, space planning, and management, etc.

It helps the students to start with designing or redesigning a residential space, from a single room to an entire space, with the client’s brief. Ina  Mood board, students assemble collections of images, materials, and color palettes to visually understand the concepts.

Managing and meeting deadlines, many students use time management techniques that help them to focus on their specific work and assigned tasks. Students should avoid last-minute hustle and stress and unexpected challenges.
